People often don’t realise there are 57 different types of steel, and the pipe fittings used in a petrochemical plant are very different to those used in, for example, the motor industry.

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, or ferrite, plus chromium and (generally) one or more other elements, which is created in a furnace. Iron goes through various phases as it is heated, which change its crystalline structure and therefore its properties. This structure, plus the other elements it is mixed with, creates various “sub-alloys”.
 
The stainless steel alloys used in petrochemical pipe fittings fall into two groups: austenitic and ferritic. Ferritic iron is closest to the unheated state; it has low carbon content with a body-centred cubic structure. It is strong, but does not weld easily. The ferritic alloys used in petrochemical pipe fittings have a high chromium content and added molybdenum to increase corrosion resistance.

Austenite steel is heated to phase 2. It has a face-centred cubic structure, and is highly corrosion resistant due to the addition of nickel (to stabilise its crystalline matrix.) Pipe fittings made of austenite steel are highly corrosion resistant, but lack the strength of ferrite steel.
In the petrochemical industry, it is important the pipe fittings are strong and corrosion resistant, so duplex or super duplex alloys are often used – these are a mixture of ferrite and austenite steel, with added elements to increase strength and resistance.
